Hugh O. Maclellan, a former board member, benefactor, and steadfast champion of Christian education, passed away on April 4, 2025 at the age of 86. Hugh and his wife, Nancy, were integral supporters of Chattanooga Christian School (CCS). Their unwavering support helped shape the foundation and mission of CCS, and the legacy they leave behind continues to impact the school today.
Hugh Maclellan was instrumental in the school's growth and development, including playing a key role in acquiring the current CCS property. In the spring of 1982, Hugh and fellow board member Richard Hostetter were driving around Chattanooga looking for a new property for the school. When they came across the closed auto dealership on Broad Street, they saw an opportunity. They approached The Maclellan Foundation about a grant to purchase the property. At the time, both Hugh and Richard served on the Board of The Maclellan Foundation, and Nancy and Richard also served together on the CCS Board. Their collaboration helped secure the location where CCS continues to operate today.
The property, which includes the original gym, would not exist without the generous support from The Maclellan Foundation. In 1987, Hugh O. Maclellan, Jr.—the third generation to lead the organization—became president and treasurer of The Maclellan Foundation, a position he held for many years. Under his leadership, the foundation's mission remained clear: "To glorify God by leveraging the legacy, resources, relationships, and experience entrusted to us to serve those advancing Christ’s Kingdom around the globe."
In 2020, as CCS reflected on its 50-year history, the school acknowledged the remarkable ways God had shown faithfulness throughout the years. Hugh Maclellan’s contributions were central to many of the key moments where God’s provision was evident. His efforts were vital in ensuring that CCS would thrive for future generations of students.
Though we mourn the loss of Hugh’s life, we rejoice in the knowledge that he is now with his Savior. We remain grateful for his friendship, his generosity, and his unwavering commitment to the mission of Christian education. His Kingdom impact will be felt for years to come.
