Theatre, Art & Robotics Camps 2017

Our Art and Theatre Camps are increasingly popular with both our CCS students and kids from the broader community. Musical Theatre Camp, for instance, has been a huge success since it began in 2007. This summer we are excited to offer circuitry enrichment and robotics camps for coding and engineering design enthusiasts.

Intro to Guitar Camp

June 12–16, 2017 / 1:00 PM–4:00 PM / 5th8th grade

Spend a week exploring guitar playing, listening, and design. Learn guitar care and how to play chords and melodies, and more. Kirk Ward is the Director of Bands and Guitar Instructor for CCS Upper School. He has a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Guitar Performance from UTK and has been a professional guitar player and instructor for over fifteen years. The cost of this camp is $150.

Become a part of a Chattanooga Christian School summer tradition as you experience our fabulous Musical Theatre Camp! Rising K - 8th grade campers will learn all that goes into putting on a musical theatre show. Campers work on performance skills (singing, dancing, and acting), stagecraft skills (creating costumes, props, and sets), and how to pull a show together through teamwork! Every child will be a part of our dazzling final production on Friday, June 23 at either 11:00 AM or 3:00 PM.  

Camp Options: Two-week participation is required. You have the choice between morning, afternoon, or full day camp.

  • Musical Theatre Performance Camp: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM - $300
  • Stage Design Art*: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM - $300
  • Full Day Musical Theatre Camp (Performance and Stage Design): 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM - $450

*Stage Design Art dives even further into the skills needed to create the visual effects of the show. Students become the set creators, prop makers, and costume designers for their show.


Intro to Photography

June 1923, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / 6th9th grade

Photograms and pinhole photography are the means for participants to learn that photography is all about light. Basic skills are learned for working with photo paper, enlargers, chemical processing, negatives and final positive prints. The CCS darkroom is non-toxic and student safe. Participants bring their own water bottles and snacks. No camera is required. This camp, led by Mrs. Lauren Leutwiler, is open to students in grades 6-9 with a maximum camp capacity of 8 students. The cost of this camp (including materials) is $165.


Intro to EV3 Robotics

June 1923, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / 4th6th grade

This camp, taught by CCS's own certified robotics instructor Jessica Yandell, will focus on building Lego EV3 robots and learning how to program robots for missions. All materials are provided. Please bring a nut-free snack. The cost of this camp is $200.


Dash, Dot, and Ozobot

June 1923, 2017 / 1:00 PM4:00 PM / K3rd grade

This camp is for younger students to learn the foundations of coding through Dash and Dot robots and Ozobots! This exciting week ends with team competitions. Students will design challenges throughout the week according to their skills and interests. Jessica Yandell, CCS's certified robotics instructor will lead the camp. All materials are provided. Please bring a nut-free snack. The cost of this camp is $175.


Kids in the Kitchen

June 1923, 2017 / 1:00 PM4:00 PM / K5th grade

Join Mrs. Beth Ann Green for a fun week of menu planning, preparation and cooking! All materials are provided and nut-free. Students will learn to plan, shop, prep, and create favorite items using safe prep and cooking skills. Parents will be invited to a tasting on the final day of class. This camp is open to students in grades K-5 with a maximum camp capacity of 10 students. The cost of this camp is $150.


***Closed*** Bright Spark

June 2630, 2017 / 1:00 PM4:00 PM / 4th8th grade

Feed your creativity this summer and become a Bright Spark! If you are a rising 4th-8th grader and are energized by innovation, Bright Spark is for you! This summer’s workshop will teach IDEO’s Design Thinking methodology. This human centered design thinking process is the foundation for creating “wow” products and services as well as solving big hairy problems. We will learn by doing! Teams will build prototypes that reimagine the green space in front of the CCS Commons (Upper School Library). At the end of the week, we will have a celebration, and teams will pitch their ideas to a team of judges. Families will be invited to attend the celebration. The mission of Bright Spark is to inspire young people to develop their creative confidence, build engagement for learning, and develop a design-based approach to problem solving. The workshop will be led by experienced Design Thinking Educators, Mr. Craig Lubbers and Mr. Ryan Van Winkle. Learn more about Bright Spark’s mission: http://www.bright-spark.org/. EV3 Robotics Week 2

This camp, also taught by certified robotics instructor Jessica Yandell, will allow students who built and programmed robots in the first week of camp to practice competition challenges. All materials provided. Please bring a nut-free snack. The cost of this camp is $200.


Desiging with Circuits

June 2630, 2017 / 1:00 PM4:00 PM / K5th grade

Campers will plan, design, and create projects using recycled materials and circuitry equipment. This camp, taught by certified robotics instructor Jessica Yandell, is for beginners who wish to become more advanced in circuitry. Final creations will be displayed in the school lobby for the first day of school! All materials provided. Please bring a nut-free snack. The cost of this camp is $175.


Aloha, Ukulele! ***Now accepting students K-8th***

June 2630, 2017 / 1:00 PM4:00 PM / K8th grade

Find out why the ukulele is one of the easiest and most fun instruments to play. Campers will learn history and design of the instrument as well as how to play chords and melodies. Intro to Nature Printing: Making Art from Leaves and Fish

June 2630, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / 6th12th grade

Artists and non-artists alike can become awesome nature printers! The Japanese have been making art from real fish since before cameras and refrigerators. In this camp you’ll learn how to make beautiful prints from leaves and fish on paper, fabric, and even your own clothing. We’ll learn how and when to use different kinds of ink as well as color theory. Students will take home many beautiful prints that their family will love. Besides teaching full time at CCS, camp instructor Matt Monahan is a gyotaku artist who teaches classes around the country. His work has been featured in the news, local stores, and even on Japanese television! Google "The Mighty Bluegill" for more information about this beautiful artform. This camp is open to students in grades 6-12 with a maximum camp capacity of 20 students. The cost of this camp is $200.


Middle & High School Musical Theatre Workshop Intensive

July 1021, 2017* / 10:00 AM3:00 PM / 7th12th grade

This Workshop is an advanced, audition-based Musical Theatre Intensive! Campers will explore more advanced levels of singing, dancing, and acting in musicals to prepare them for higher levels of musical theatre performance. Pre-requisites: If you have performed in 2+ High School musicals at CCS or 2+ Middle School musicals at CCS, consider this Workshop. Contact the Theatre Director with pre-requisite questions. We are happy to help place you in the best camp for you to grow, lead, and thrive! The cost of this camp is $375.

*Middle & High School Musical Theatre Workshop Intensive campers must audition in the spring to receive roles (audition date TBD). Campers may arrange an audition directly with the Theatre Director. If a camper lives out of town, he or she may make arrangements to send in a video.


3D Design & Printing

July 1014, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / 4th6th grade

Campers will be taught how to design objects using 3D printer software with certified robotics instructor Jessica Yandell. Each student will work throughout the week to produce their objects, which they can then take home with them. All materials provided. Please bring a nut-free snack. The cost of this camp is $200.


Ladies' Choice Robotics

July 1014, 2017 / 1:00 PM4:00 PM / K5th grade

This girls-only robotics camp is for beginners and experienced programmers. Using all of our robotics materials, from Dash and Dot to our EV3 Mindstorms, students will code, design, and complete challenges. This camp will be lead by CCS's own certified robotics instructor Jessica Yandell. All materials provided. Please bring a nut-free snack. The cost of this camp is $200.


Comic Characters

July 1014, 2017 / 9:00 AM–12:00 PM / 2nd–6th grade

Students will learn basics of drawing comic characters within a variety of contexts. They will use these concepts to create their own original comic pieces within a variety of mediums. This camp will take place in Mr. Josh Green's art studio on the CCS campus. Mr. Green is the CCS Lower School art teacher. He is a father to four, artist, and musician, and enjoys establishing wonder and curiosity regarding all things creative. This camp is open to students in grades 2-6 with a maximum camp capacity of 18 students. The cost of this camp is $150.


Music Around the Globe

July 1014, 2017 / 1:00 PM4:00 PM / K5th grade

Travel the Globe through the music of various cultures. Campers will sing, play drums, and dance along to songs from Africa, South America, Asia and Europe. Creative Sculpture

July 1014, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / 4th7th grade

Experience a week of making creative sculptures and learning 3D techniques. Students will explore paper, wire, and plaster sculptures working from their own designs toward a finalized imaginative sculpture on display. This camp will take place in Mr. Shaun LaRose’s art studio on the CCS campus. Mr. LaRose was a professional artist for 15 years as a painter and public artist. He is currently the Fine Arts Director at CCS and teaches drawing and painting to 8th-12th grade students. This camp is open to students in grades 4-7 with a maximum camp capacity of 18 students. The cost of this camp is $150.


***Full*** American Girl Fun

July 1014, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:30 PM / K5th grade

With themed days like “Fun in the Sun” and “Let’s Go Camping,” campers will make handcrafted, customized accessories like hoverboards and swimming pools for their American Girl Dolls with Mrs. Paige Turner. All materials will be provided. Don’t have an American Girl Doll? No problem! Bring one of your favorite dolls with you to this fun and crafty camp. This camp is open to all students in grades K through 5 with a maximum camp capacity of 15 students. The cost of this camp is $175.


Painting People, Places, and Pets

July 1721, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / 4th8th grade

Experience a week of painting your favorite pet, landscape, or person. Students will receive foundational painting techniques for the first couple of classes and then move on to a final painting of their choice. This camp will take place in Mr. Shaun LaRose’s art studio on the CCS campus. Mr. LaRose was a professional artist for 15 years as a painter and public artist. He is currently the Fine Arts Director at CCS and teaches drawing and painting to 8th-12th grade students. This camp is open to students in grades 4-8 with a maximum camp capacity of 18 students. Drawing the Extraordinary

July 1721, 2017 / 1:004:00 PM / 4th8th grade

Take an ordinary object and turn it into something extraordinary with imaginative drawing. We will be learning some foundational drawing the first few days of camp culminating into our final imaginative project. This camp will take place in Mr. Shaun LaRose’s art studio on the CCS campus. Mini Monets

July 1721, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / K–5th grade

Students will learn basic art techniques to experiment and create original pieces of artwork within a variety of mediums. Mediums will include watercolor, scratchboard, and pen-and-ink. This camp will take place in Mr. Josh Green's art studio on the CCS campus. Mr. Green is the CCS Lower School art teacher. He is a father to four, artist, and musician, and enjoys establishing wonder and curiosity regarding all things creative. This camp is open to students in grades K-5 with a maximum camp capacity of 18 students. The cost of this camp is $150.


Printmaking

July 1721, 2017 / 1:00 PM–4:00 PM / 4th–8th grade

This class will enable students to take images that would ordinarily be very difficult to draw, and empower them to create beautiful, imaginative prints. Mediums will include soft-cut rubber slabs and printing ink. Printmaking covers the process of creating prints that have an element of originality, rather than just being a photographic reproduction of a painting. This camp will take place in Mr. Josh Green's art studio on the CCS campus. Mr. Green is the CCS Lower School art teacher. He is a father to four, artist, and musician, and enjoys establishing wonder and curiosity regarding all things creative. This camp is open to students in grades 4-8 with a maximum camp capacity of 18 students. The cost of this camp is $150.


Ceramic Handbuilding Camp ***Date changed to July 24-28***

July 24–28, 2017 / 9:00 AM12:00 PM / 1:00 PM–4:00 PM / 5th12th grade

This camp will be an introduction into the incredibly versatile material of clay. Through techniques like slab and coil building, students will learn how to create many different forms out of clay. Additionally, they will learn how to incorporate 2D design into their 3D forms with different surface decorating techniques like sgraffito. From a slab built mug to a coil built bowl, everyone will come home with exciting, personalized creations. Natalie Thedford is the Pottery teacher at CCS. She has her BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in 3D Art. This camp will take place in the pottery studio on the CCS campus. It is open to students in grades 5-12 with a maximum camp capacity of 12 students. All tools and materials are included. The cost of this camp is $175.
