Cross Country at CCS
Cross Country is a fall sport for both boys and girls. Chargers Cross Country is a wonderful team community in which relationships grow deep - both relationships with teammates and a closer relationship with Christ. All interested athletes in grades 3-12 are given opportunities to train and race. The Lower School program introduces runners to being part of a team and the principles of conditioning. The Middle School team further develops athletes' sense of contributing to the team and provides opportunity for individuals and the team to qualify for the Middle School State Championship Meet. The High School team competes in weekly races against approximately forty area schools of all types and sizes. Both boys and girls train annually to qualify to compete at the State Championship meet in Nashville, where the boys have fielded championship teams in 1995, 1996, 2001, and 2017, and the girls team won in 1999, 2000, and 2011.
Daniel Russell is in his 2nd year as the Chargers Head Cross Country Coach. He also serves as the Head Track and Field coach at CCS.
Russell began coaching the CCS Track and Field team in 2012 and last year joined the Cross Country program as the Head Women’s Coach. Prior to CCS, Russell served two years at Covenant College as the Assistant Cross Country Coach where he helped coach the mens and womens program to conference runner-up titles and an individual male conference championship.
Last year, the girls cross country team took 6th place at the state meet, their first appearance since 2011. Since taking over the track and field program, Russell has coached the girls team to a 5th place team finish in 2018, 8th place in 2017, and 10th place in 2016. 2018 marked a back-to-back 4x200 state championship.
He completed his Masters of Athletic Administration from Ohio University and holds a NFHS track and field certification and Level 1 USA Track and Field coaching certification. He also has a USTFCCCA Technical Coaching certification.
Russell and his wife, Meredith, live in downtown Chattanooga, Tenn., with their son, Levi, and attend North Shore Fellowship in North Chattanooga.
