Chapel & Spiritual Life
In the Upper School, students attend weekly chapel services on Wednesdays. These services provide an opportunity for community worship, ministry to the needs of students, and proclamation of the Gospel of the Kingdom of Christ.
Reading is a vital part of a Christian scholar's life. As a way to foster a love for the written word, CCS requires students to read two books for summer reading—one as a part of a faculty-sponsored book group and one for English class.
In late spring, students sign up for a book selected by a teacher. Titles range from classic to contemporary in a variety of genres. These book groups meet in August for discussion and assessment.
For a week during the third quarter (usually around President's Day), all regular classes are suspended, and students and teachers re-align to engage in a host of truly extra-curricular activities. Teachers offer alternative “classes,” and students sign up according to their interests and course availability; these offerings have ranged from Japan trips to French cuisine to surfing in Florida to bass fishing on the Tennessee River.
The focus of assessment at CCS is on measuring student learning, not on producing a grade for the sake of producing a grade. To this end, we evaluate students using a variety of formative and summative assessments, including collaborative projects, written essays, speeches, and tests (including NWEA, ACT, SAT, and AP exams).
Chattanooga Christian School is accredited by AdvancED and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). CCS is approved by the Tennessee Department of Education and is a member of Christian Schools International (CSI).
The median class size in the Upper School is 19, and the average student-to-teacher ratio is 12:1. The average student load for each teacher is around 88.
