At CCS, we see reading as a vital part of what makes us believers, scholars, and empathetic citizens of the world. The mission of the Summer Reading program at CCS is to invite students, faculty, and staff
- to join a community of readers who see reading as a joyful, life-giving opportunity,
- to be stretched by new ideas and perspectives,
- and to collectively consider important questions and issues as encountered through books.
To accomplish this mission in the Lower School, we create a unique Summer Reading program each year. This program is designed to inspire children to love reading for its own sake, focusing on the intrinsic rewards of story, imagination, and curiosity rather than elaborate rewards or competitions. Each year, we also focus on an all-school book—most recently Blackout by John Rocco.
